Frequently Asked Questions

"I had a natural birth and I am positive I would not have been able to do it without her help, encouragement, and coaching throughout the process." - Lynn A.
What is a doula?
In the simplest definition, a doula helps families during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period by providing emotional, physical, and educational support. Some doulas also offer infertility and bereavement services.
Are doulas only for first-time mothers?
Just like every baby is different, every pregnancy and birth experience is unique. Because of this, a doula can be helpful even if you have had a baby before.
Why don't you have a doula certification?
Certification is not required in the United States to practice as a doula. While certification is a wonderful way to be trained as a doula, I received my training as an apprentice to midwives and doulas rather than by taking a class.
Why should I have a doula if my partner/parent/friend will be at my birth?
A partner, parent, or friend is a great person to have at your birth. However, they are often not able to offer the perspective that comes with having attended and witnessed dozens of births. As a doula, I support not only mothers but all members of a family. Far from replacing family and friends, a good doula can encourage and educate your loved ones about the best ways for them to help you welcome your baby.
Are doulas only for natural birth?
Doulas are not just for natural birth! Even if you are planning to have an epidural or scheduled C-section, a doula can be a great choice.

If you are planning to have an epidural, a doula can help suggest ways to manage your energy, maintain comfort while laboring in bed, and find effective positions for pushing and delivery. If you are planning to have a C-section, your doula can go with you to support you and your partner before, during, and after surgery.

A doula's job is to support and empower your choices, no matter what those choices are.

What is an infertility doula?
An infertility doula provides support to individuals and couples who have been trying to conceive unsuccessfully for at least 12 months. Infertility support can include: joining you at appointments, phone or in-person emotional support, explanation of procedures and terms, fertility education
What is a bereavement doula?
The bereavement doula is a relatively new idea. A bereavement doula is a person who comes alongside grieving parents who have experienced a pregnancy loss. Sometimes this is as simple as offering a shoulder to cry on, but it can include home visits, meal preparation, and care during the mourning process.
How does the doula hire process work?
To hire a doula, the first step is to request your free doula consultation. In this meeting, you and the doula have an opportunity to get to know each other, ask questions, and talk about what your needs, hopes, and wishes for your birth or postpartum experience.

After this meeting, you will have the opportunity to think, meet with other doulas (if you want to) and decide who you want to hire. You will negotiate and sign a contract that includes fees, dates, and expectations.

How much does it cost to hire a doula?
Like many doulas, I offer several different packages to help my clients get what they need at a price they can afford. Reduced prices and/or payment plan options are available to those who can demonstrate need.
  • Standard birth doula package: $650
  • Postpartum doula:  $25/hr
  • Infertility doula care: prices dependent on services
  • Bereavement doula care: no charge. This is a "pay what you can" service that is made freely available to families grieving the loss of a pregnancy for any reason, at any stage

how many births have you attended?
I was five years old the first time I witnessed a birth. Since then, I have attended dozens of births in various capacities -- as a friend, family member, observer, assistant, and doula.

Meet Doula Beth

I was raised by a homebirth midwife and started attending and assisting at births before I was even out of high school. I was caring for newborns long before that!

Like women have been doing throughout history, I was trained through apprenticing to some truly wonderful midwives and doulas. I am convinced that women's bodies are made to give birth successfully and that my job is to educate, cheerlead, and encourage my clients along the way.

It's your body, your birth, and your baby: I'm just here to help you have the best experience possible.
